Strange But True: Abbas Is Irreplaceable

According to Military Intelligence, if the talks at Annapolis fail--Abbas may step down.
If he does go home in the wake of a failure of the talks, without a successor acceptable to Fatah, Abbas' departure would create a lacuna in the Palestinian leadership and increase Hamas influence.
Hard to believe--Abbas is supposed to be all that stands in the way of Hamas. So where is the Palestinian leadership? In The End of the Palestinian National Movement, Danny Rubinstein writes that a number of prominent leaders--Nabil Shaath, Muhammad Dahlan and Hasan Asfor--have left and now spend their time in Cairo:

This is what the PA has come to?
